A Study on Sexual Dysfunction Prevalence Across Nepal

In Nepal, issues surrounding sexual health are often clouded by social stigmas and limited research. Yet sexual health is essential for the holistic well-being of individuals and societies alike. Recognizing the need for deeper insights into this critical area, Society for Local Integrated Development Nepal (SOLID Nepal) is launching a comprehensive study to assess the prevalence and risk factors associated with sexual dysfunction among Nepalese adults.

Why This Study Matters

Sexual health is a key component of overall well-being, affecting not only individuals but also couples, families, and communities. In addition to issues like sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancies, sexual dysfunction can profoundly impact mental health and interpersonal relationships. Research from various global studies has shown that sexual dysfunction is prevalent worldwide, but local data is lacking in Nepal. SOLID Nepal’s study aims to address this gap by identifying the prevalence of sexual dysfunction and exploring its links with chronic health conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and mental health challenges.

Objectives of the Study

Our main objective is to assess the prevalence of sexual dysfunction in Nepal while also identifying risk factors and chronic conditions associated with it. Through this work, we hope to shed light on the needs and challenges faced by the Nepalese population regarding sexual health.

Methodology

To ensure comprehensive data, SOLID Nepal is employing a cross-sectional research design. A multi-stage cluster sampling method will be used to represent all three ecological belts and seven provinces of Nepal, with a total sample size of 3,400 participants. The study will target individuals aged 30 and above, ensuring data from both urban and rural areas.

In addition to surveys, in-depth interviews (IDIs) and key informant interviews (KIIs) will be conducted with individuals experiencing sexual dysfunction and healthcare providers who regularly work with these patients. We’ll use validated tools, including the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), to capture detailed insights.

Ensuring Ethical Research

SOLID Nepal is committed to ethical standards. Ethical approval for the study will be secured from the Nepal Health Research Council (NHRC), and informed consent will be obtained from all participants. Participant anonymity and confidentiality will be strictly maintained.

How This Research Will Help

The findings from this study will help SOLID Nepal and public health professionals design targeted interventions to address sexual health needs. By shedding light on these issues, SOLID Nepal aims to reduce the stigma around sexual dysfunction, promote open dialogue, and contribute to improved health policies and support systems in Nepal.
